Artist Statement

Over the last 30 years, home was in five different countries around the globe. This diverse experience influences my paintings in a number of ways. Color choices evoke a mood reminiscent of unique locales. Color, brush strokes and the feel of the canvas combine and my experiences in Rio, Düsseldorf, Singapore, Shanghai and Wilton, CT materialize. Ultimately, my paintings reflect the sounds, smells, weather, and cultures of these diverse cities.

I never use reference photos, but begin with a color palette and then the canvas dictates the shape and stroke while a sense of feeling evolves. Only after the painting is well on its way does it reveal its character and location. The act of being in the moment morphs into a painting that I would never have done with preplanned images.

Once the painting has all that is needed, I put it aside for a while and thereafter reevaluate it and add or subtract what is needed to bring the painting to its completion. When the final piece is done, I recognize the world I know. Being in the moment is the key.
